About Colonial Contry Club

Colonial forces the Tour pros to put the driver away as hitting the fairway is a must in order to have success at this track. There is no doubt that it is nice to be able to hit the long ball, but any wayward shots here are going to lead to trouble, and your tournament will end with a missed cut. The truth is that all styles of players are in play this weekend, and this is truly going to be a test from tee to green.

The scoring prowess at Colonial has historically been far lower than tour average.  To make matters worse, the bogey rate can often be found to be slightly higher, but players are going to have to rely on pars and hot streaks to contend at the top of the leaderboard. While the course record is 61 which is held by 6 players. Yet, the course isn’t always a scoring fest. Plenty of past tournaments have seen winners in the range of 12-14 under par. In 2014, Adam Scott won with a single digit 9-under.

What Colonial is most known for is the “Horrible Horseshoe.” Thanks to it’s U like shape, holes 3,4 and 5 challenge golfers early in their round. Utilizing the dog leg left, players face a 483-yard par 4, a 247-yard par 3, and finish with a 481-yard par 4 that dog legs to the right. Tee shots lost here quickly add to high scores for the golfers. As always, the main detriment for any golfer in Texas will be the wind.  If the prevailing gusts fail to appear you could see a course where the most accurate are going to benefit just from being closer to the pin with shorter putts.

This is a second shot golf course.  You need to be able to hit these small greens and you need to be able to scramble if you miss them. There is plenty of undulation in the greens, and the landing spots are incredibly important to set themselves up for scoring opportunities. Driving accuracy will be important, but the rough isn’t that penalizing. The important thing is that you’re able to have a clear angle at the green and commit to your second shot.  While many think players will lean on the par 5’s for scoring, tread cautiously as the two of them rank in the top half of difficulty amongst all 18 holes.

Past Winners

Daniel Berger
2020

Berger won his first PGA Tour title in three years with a playoff victory over Collin Morikawa. Both players finished regulation on 15-under 265, and a playoff seemed appropriate since the three-month layoff due to Covid-19.

In truth, Berger got lucky. Morikawa missed a 6-footer on 18, and the birdie would have prevented the extra hole.

Kevin Na
2019

Na was walking them all in this weekend as he shot three straight rounds in the 60’s. 2nd place finisher Tony Finau wasn’t close as Na won with a 13-under 267.

This was the second year in a row Na dominated Colonial, and has mentioned plenty of times how much he loves this track.

Justin Rose
2018

Koepka was close, but couldn’t catch the English ball striker. Rose fell one shy of teh touranment record with a 20-under 259. This included a 6-under 64 on Sunday.

Rose finished first in strokes gained approach, fourth in strokes gained off-the-tee.

Kevin Kisner
2017

Kisner came through on Sunday and ended up outlasting Jon Rahm, Sean O’Hair and Jordan Spieth.

Kisner finished the touranment with a 10-under 270, and played near perfect on Sunday to caputre the win.

*Played as Dean & DeLuca Invitational

Jordan Spieth
2016

Spieth adorned the plaid jacket as he finished his final round on a bridie streak. It was Spieth’s eighth win on tour, and his dominance in his home state was on point.

Spieth shot a 5-under 65 in SUnday’s final round to beat Harris English for the win.

*Played as Dean & DeLuca Invitational

Chris Kirk
2015

Kirk outlasted Jason Bohn, Brandt Snedeker and Jordan Spieth by shooting a 12-under 268.

Kirk almost lost this on Sunday with an errant tee shot on the 18th hole. Yet, he managed the pressure of winning with a key 7-foot putt to save par and avoid an extra hole playoff.

*Played as Crowne Plaza Invitational

Adam Scott
2014

It took three extra holes for Adam Scott to claim the title and plaid jacket as it was one of the most exciting touranment finishes this event has ever witnessed.

Scott started Sunday two shots back, and topped Jason Dufner in a playoff. Scott battled all weekend as he barely mad the cut on Friday. His third and fourth rounds were simply better than everyone else as he shot a low of 66 to win with a 9-under 271

*Played as Crowne Plaza Invitational

Boo Weekley
2013

This was Weekley’s third win on the PGA Tour as he shot a 4-under 266. All 4 of Weekley’s rounds were sub-70, and he had jsut enough to outlast Matt Kuchar and Zach Johnson.

Weekley never looked back after consecutive bridies at 8,9 and 10.

*Played as Crowne Plaza Invitational
